After a detour in downtown Cape Town, the collection now makes its way back up to Kloof Street to finally include the loveliness that is Knead. Yes, ladies and gentleman, this Artisan Bakery and happy day-time hangout now has a store on the Kloof, and since its opening in December, I haven’t once walked past there when the terrace wasn’t full of cheerful coffee drinking, bread-loving folk.
Knead has been around since 2006 when they opened there first bakery and neighbourhood cafe, as they (rather aptly) call it, in Wembley Square. Since then they extended to Muizenberg, Newlands and Claremont. Apart from the daily freshness that is their handcrafted bread (which I’ll get to soon), the general atmosphere is one of comfort, it’s just a layed-back spot to go for breakfast, lunch or early dinner. So when Caramello’s in Kloof Street’s Lifestyle Centre closed down and, after months of closed windows and the smell of construction at the ATM next door, the curly Knead sign appeared out on the street, it just seemed the perfect spot for fresh bread and many Summer patio lunches.
So why is it so comfy and welcoming? Well, there’s the white washed, solid wooden tables with their dark wood tops. There’s the fact that some of these tables are big enough for ten people, meaning that small groups of strangers share a table, further upping the casual feel. Then there’s the wooden finishing, up against the walls and outside enclosing the railings and creating the raised bar-like tables looking our over the street. And what better way to compliment all the wooden surroundings than with stacks of freshly baked bread. If it’s not stacks and baskets full of fresh bread, it’s stacks of empty baskets, ready and waiting for tasty sandwiches.
So let’s get to those breads. They’re handmade, speciality breads made fresh every day. They’re made entirely from scratch, meaning no premade mixes. They consist of natural ingredients alone, the key ingredient being stoneground flower. This means that they have no preservatives. These guys know their breads, and Knead has become a popular place to pop in and buy these fresh breads for the home too.
Now if you sit down to order, you’ve got a choice between gourmet style open sandwiches or classic toasted sandwiches, and that’s not even starting on the pizzas and pies. The toasties are served with thin cut fries and make for a deliciously filling meal. The toppings are all fresh and combinations are classic, but with tasty twists. For example, locally cured smoked ham with rocket pesto, cherry tomatoes, kalamata olives and parmesan shaves. You’ll also be happy to hear that you can choose between sourdough, buttermilk rye, 100% rye, seeded health and gluten free bread. I indulged in a buttermilk rye toasted sandwich with chicken, red pepper pesto mayo, gherkin and marinated red onion.
Then, of course, there’s the woodfried pizzas, made on site in the ever so fitting woodfried oven in one of the back corners. You’re also welcome to pop in for some fresh pies, croissants, petit fours and cupcakes, a selection of which are displayed inside. Where drinks are concerned, expect all the favourites, from freshly squeezed juices and coffees to a very refreshing iced latte.
