I only learnt about the history of Franschhoek yesterday, a sad truth about me. But, I can now proudly say that I know all about the French Huguenots who were persecuted in France and decided to come live here. They also happened to land on some amazing winemaking lands, so it doesn’t seem like it ended all that bad for them.
Here are a few overcast photos of the, very prominent, Huguenot Monument. It’s basically the climax of this small town’s main road. After walking past endless restaurants and cafe’s, you end up here. It’s quite a pretty picture to walk down the road and see this structure looming in the distance.
The graveyard right behind the monument is a little creepy, but pretty non the less. The monument is open every day until 5pm and costs R10 to explore.
