A night of kitsch at South Africa’s coolest trailer park

Old Mac Daddy Luxury Trailer Park is probably one of the most unique weekend accommodation spots outside of Cape Town. Just imagine this: You live inside an individually designed airstream trailer, surrounded by trees, slanted up against a hill and overlooking a beautiful dam in the Western Cape’s absolutely gorgeous Elgin Valley. If you like something a little different and a little creative, then it doesn’t get much better than this.

The trailers are way out, colourful and perfectly perfectly over the top. I had the privilege staying in on of the kitsch-craziest ones – the Mills and Boon trailer. You can only imagine the amounts of pink, velvet and tiny M&B books that were piled in here. Classic 1950’s decor and furniture was carefully picked out to fit into this rather small, but very cosy, space.

Old Mac Daddy doesn’t only pride itself it its originality, but also in its eco-consciousness. All trailer units (little living areas and outside decks attached to some of the trailers) are built with products that come from recycled materials or that are sensitive to the environment. Getting to the trailers you walk on wooden walkways, letting the plants continue to grow as they please below your feet, and all the soaps and bathroom products are environmentally aware.

And finally, the restaurant and bar is absolutely beautiful – a glass dome hovering over a dam – and serves delicious pizzas. Now sit back and enjoy a collection of photos from this amazing and unthinkable wonderland.
